Topic 2016: Small is beautiful

One glance at any ranking of countries' economic or societal performance reveals an interesting pattern. Weather one looks at per capita income, economic competitiveness, education, or even happiness, small countries emerge as dominant.

A recent United Nations report on happiness revealed that out of the 10 happiest countries in the world, 7 have populations of less than 10 million (Switzerland, Iceland, Denmark, and Norway are the happiest). Competitiveness rankings paint a similar picture. In the IMD 2015 World Competitiveness Ranking, small countries top the list, with Singapore, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Denmark among the top most competitive.

What do these small countries do differently? Why are they wealthier and better educated? Why are their citizens happier? And most importantly, what can other countries and their policymakers learn from small countries' experience?
